A letter to my ideal audience member:

My Dear Friend,

I am so sorry that your husband has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. I know first-hand the shock that this delivers. I know the sense of loss, the bewilderment when so suddenly faced with the never-ending, exhausting duties of care giving. I say sudden because it feels
sudden, whether or not you were expecting it.

You will probably go through as many stages as he will. Maybe more. I have. Alzheimer’s has three major stages, but seven altogether.

But know this: The strange and unbelievable behaviour that he will display throughout these stages are THE DISEASE, NOT YOU. Use that as your armour and continue to nurture the love.

Help is available. You will know when it’s time to call for it. And always, always take care of you. You will need your strength to carry him through. And I guarantee that you will want to. Love runs deep.
