The ‘Secret’ to Happiness

Happiness is…

Moments of Happiness

Someone posted a postcard on Facebook labelled Collect Moments, which read:

“Collect moments, not things”

Sorry I didn’t log the source, but it was posted to the public.

And,

–Mentors Channel asks: is that the secret to happiness?

Collect Your Happiness

Well, happiness is a transient thing. It comes and it goes. So does its intensity.

It can be of a moment, of a deed, of a person…it’s a wee capsule of time.

And it can flee without giving notice, at any moment, for no apparent reason, and life is left ordinary again.

Happiness can also be a blanket of contentment, a blanket that can be ripped off at any time, also without notice.

You can even be happy in general without even noticing – until someone asks, or comments. Or until something happens.

Happiness is transient.

So when you are surprised by a visit of Happiness, embrace it, enjoy it. Remember it in the hard times.

This is what is so important in the world of Alzheimer’s. For example, my wife was weeping when I arrived at the home the other day. She was inconsolable. Since she can’t speak, she could not explain. I don’t think she could anyway. I think it is just a part of this miserable disease.

I eventually got her calmed down. I offered her a chocolate. She nodded her head with the eagerness of a child. And she practically purred as she savoured the flavour.

Happiness.

Then I pulled out one of our photo albums. The page it opened up to showed our first born as a two-year-old in England kicking at a football. Her eyes lit up with fondness, she smiled—no, she beamed—and her hand reached out to touch the photo; her fingers caressed the image. A little tear appeared in her eye, this tear of a totally different quality.

Happiness.

So glad I visited.

Happiness.

Reading a good book.

Happiness.

Memories of dancing with my wife.

Happiness.

Birthdays and Christmas with the family and the wee ones: Priceless.

Happiness.

You can compile your own list. It’s a good thing to do. Especially when disaster, large or small, blows up in your life and you become susceptible to despair. Tell yourself, this, too, is transitory.

Because it is. No matter how long the transit lasts.

Anyway, you survived.

That is happiness.

So that’s my wish for you, from this season on, lots and lots of

Happiness.
