You Stand and Stare
You look confused.
You stand and stare.
Do you know where
You are? So sorry, dear.
Let me help you along.
No, I don’t mind, my dear.
Please don’t you fear,
I’ll come along with you.
Yes, I’ll stay, yes you can pray –
Don’t you rush no need to rush,
It’s okay. I don’t have to rush
Anywhere either.
Anything that helps.
Are you ready now?
Have you decided how
To get back home?
Going east? Going west?
Take your time, I have all day.
Going west. Well okay.
We’re on our way.
Waiting…I am waiting
For her to make up her mind.
When you’ve lost your mind,
Life is hard, but my love is not abating.
Come along now, dear you,
We’re almost home,
Our safety zone.
And yes, I love you.
Some people, not just those with dementia-Alzheimer’s, simply cannot make up their minds.
I used to be one of them.
Note: I am teaming up with fellow writer John Knapp, author of Donna’s Story, to do readings and discussions at care homes.
Both books are available on Amazon and at Friesen Press.
