I Am Called to Duty

I AM CALLED TO DUTY

H. W. Bryce

My country is in danger, I must go to her

In this, her desperate hour of need.

The call to duty is a call that I must heed,

For I have sworn an oath of faith with her.

Yes, I must heed this call to duty,

For it’s the honest thing to do;

I must swear to my allegiance now anew,

For service is a thing of beauty.

I must go to her at once and serve,

And put my needs and wants on hold,

And learn to give my actions bold

To show respect I know that she’ll deserve.

I now must learn to give to others,

To give up all my childish things,

And strive to earn my duty’s wings,

To treat all beings as my brothers.

It’s come my time to serve, for I am called to duty,

And I must go, for lives may well depend on me.
