GLORY! Glory be to peace

Glory

Glory be to peace

H. W. Bryce

Go to war for glory
Fight the ‘glorious’ fight
But though fame may come
Fame will go and glory too
Quicker than a wink

Glory has a reputation,
Though it precedes the deed,
For glory is a situation
From which much sorrow breeds.

Best to talk things through,
Best to honour you be true,
For even your brave enemy
Is but flesh and blood right through.

Oh, Glory calls its clarion call,
It’s mighty hard to resist
Vengeance shall be ours, you cry,
And never think you should desist.

New times are now upon us,
A new man at the helm appeals,
“Let us resolve to put peace first.”
And hopes his words have seals.

He calls to end our differences,
To unite in all good will
To calm the gods of war,
And let our hearts be still.

The poet notes that glory’s laurel
Withers quicker than a rose,
But defend we must when duty calls
We do not fight for a glory pose.

Peace. Yes, it’s still a dream
But will forever be a dream
Until we put our backs to it
And work to make it so.

E. A. Housman, in his poem To an Athlete Dying Young*, wrote:
“…Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay,
And early though the laurel grows,
It withers quicker than the rose.”
*In Tales of a Shropshire Lad

Antonio Guterres: In the first minute after taking over as U.N. chief (Secretary-General) on Sunday, Guterres issued an “Appeal for Peace.” He urged all people in the world to make a shared New Year’s resolution: “Let us resolve to put peace first.”

And so, perhaps, a thought:

Glory be to glory,
Glory is its own reward,
Let glory yet be humble:
Reserve it for your sports

Next Year

Next Year - Old Codger

Next Year - Next Year illustration

Next Year

Just you wait and see

H. W. Bryce

Next year I’m gonna knock ’em”outta the park,”
No more namby-pamby, no more for a lark,
I’m gonna be the strong one, just listen to me bark,
Next year I’m just gonna knock ’em “outta the park!”

No more makin’ up excuses, no more putting off,
Time to take my courage, knock all of that stuff off.
Too long I’ve been a coward, time to face the facts—
Those who don’t get doin’ are dumped like useless hacks.

Too long I’ve been a dreamer, too long to wait and see,
Too long I’ve watched the others get to where I need to be,
It’s time to plan some action, no time to shed a tear,
Yes time to seize the day, that time is now next year.

Yes it’s time to knock ’em dead, that time is now next year.
Next year I’m gonna win that home crowd’s winning cheer.
I kid you not, I’m gonna do it, I am fit and full of grit,
The enemy within is gonna grind and twist, he’s gonna throw a fit.

Next year I’m gonna give ’em hell, I’m gonna show ’em how,
I’ll impress them oh so much they’re gonna scrape and bow.
I’m gonna fly so high yer gonna ooh and awe—
Those who ever dissed me will have crow stuck in their craw!

Yeah I’m gonna be a new man come early on next year,
Just you wait you’ll be impressed, you’ll even shed a tear.
You bet yer boots I mean it, I’m resolved upon success,
I’ll be saying fond farewell to the old me in a mess.

So come and meet the new me, the one who I’ll become,
And if you ever need some help, I will give you some.
I’m in training now so let me be most clear,
I will be a new man come early on next year.

Christmas: Time to share

CHRISTMAS

Time to share

H. W. Bryce

Christmas is a time to think, renew, to share,
A time for action on our promises to care.

Hard times are facts where poverty can still abound,
Hard to believe that we don’t care all the year around.

Rum balls and cake, and turkey and sauce, we do indulge,
Refugees, flooded roads and fields, a home begrudged.

I know that I am lucky and I give my heartfelt thanks.
I wish an end to orphaning, to food banks and tanks.

Some of us are toy proud and not so very thankful,
Some of us are lonely, alone and distressful.

Think of abandonment, the wounded, the ill,
They all need our help, their lives to fulfill.

Me is not the most important person on this earth,
Every person here is equal in his worth.

Andy the bum spends Christmas in a box on the street,
Forgotten and lost and never feeling more beat.

Spiritual renewal, swearing to good weal—
To live within that sounds like a pretty good deal.

Merrier the Christmas when we share the year around,
Remember we are human, together we are bound.

Merry Christmas Everyone.

Goodbye Regret: I’ve no more use for you

Goodbye regret

Shaking off regret – celebrating

Goodbye Regret

Goodbye regret,
I’ve no more use for you
You used my time
You sapped my strength
But now I’m fine, Goodbye.

I made amends, apologized,
I started new but there was you
Still harassing me,
And there was me still paralyzed.

I’m sorry I was kind to you
I never should have let you in,
But I am strong now once again,
Goodbye regret – you’ve had your due.

Goodbye, I’m showing you the door
It works both ways, it’s how you came,
It’s how you’re going out. Slam the door,
Throw a fit, it isn’t going to help.
I’m through with you. Now shoo!

You’ve done your worst, I’ve paid the cost,
I’ve suffered, I was lost. But now I’m through
With being bossed by such as you.
I’m through with you, goodbye regret, goodbye!

I banish you to wilderness
With sorrow, hurt, heartbreak and all,
I now adopt my new good friend, Good Vibes,
I’ve had enough of your Downside, goodbye!

Goodbye regret you have no use,
You only put the damper on.
I now subscribe one heavy dose
Of this: your own snake oil so gross.

Once Upon a Mind

Once upon a mind - old man

Once Upon a Mind

H. W. Bryce

Once upon a mind
I had dreams, I made plans,
I lived my utmost day by day,
I was bold, I had my say,
I broke the bonds, I ope’d the bans,
Once upon a mind.

I miss the days when I was strong
Never put a foot down wrong,
I wish I could, and if I could, I would
Be that strong again.

I had dreams, lived up to some,
I did the things I could, by gum,
I lived, I loved, I gave some back,
But then I never did keep track…
Once upon a mind.

Once upon a mind…

Once upon a mind
Life was then more kind
People had respect
Trust had its effect
There were plenty smiles
We were healthy walking miles
People talked to people
Churches were alive beneath their steeple
Once upon a mind.

Somehow things got tangled up,
I lost control, my mind shut up,
My body ceased, my spirit grieved,
And I lost out on life, so did life…
Once upon a mind.

Once upon a mind folks looked up to me
They asked for my advice and drank a cup
Of life’s sweet nectar while we lit the torch
For tomorrow’s day, we had our say…
Once upon a mind.

Once upon a mind - old house

People cared in days of yore,
Didn’t mind if you were pore,
Don’t know what happened then
Till now or if they’ll change, or when…

Once upon a mind the world stood still,
Just for a moment…to hear the soldiers sing,
‘Til they were ordered back to cope
That day nearly crushed the life of hope.
Oh, once upon a mind we dreamed,
But other forces reigned and deemed
That they knew best…
Once upon a mind.

And now I sit, I’ve been left out,
Although I’ve had a life there is no doubt
My glory days are through…
But the spark of life remembers when
I was strong and you knew me then…
Once upon a mind.

So,
Now it’s you who has to carry on
And I am fine with that, move on,
I leave the task in able hands
I know the world in all its lands
Is going to be…quite all right—
And so am I; I keep in sight
That Peace will be reborn and live,
That all good hearts to this will give.

Once upon a mind,,,
I had dreams, I had plans,
And still I have, I believe
The young will grab the torch
And lead the way to Peace!
I believe as once I did…
Once upon a mind…

Here’s to All My Friends

Here’s to All My Friends

H. W. Bryce

Here’s to all my friends,
Left long behind of old
In the dust of distant past,
Although forgotten not,
You’re the ones who made me
The man I am today.

Here’s to the friends for just a day
Who helped me in some other way.
The milk of human kindliness
Shone in their friendly eyes.

Here’s to the many strangers
Who lent a helping hand,
The ones who stayed on after
’Cause they’d become my friends.

Here’s to all my friends at the care home
Where I no longer go. My life moved on
But they stayed there and cared their care
To others’ caring needs. Such loving deeds.

To the boys and girls of childhood,
You’re not forgot, friendship was good,
And today it’s still in play.
Any time, my friends, come and stay.

Friendship is something that I bless.
I wish the best to all my friends.
I thank you for all your caring,
I’m indebted to your sharing—
Although sometimes life took some bends
Remember, friendships have no ends.

Here’s to all my friends, both new and old,
I drink your health, I wish you wealth
Of spirit, hope and strength. May I make so bold—
Friendship is gold, just like we’re told—
You are my hero, a true example of true friend,
I want to be like you. I want a friendship blend.

A friend in need is a friend indeed
For friendship is a creed,
For it holds true ’cause it works both ways
Even in troubled days.

Cheers!

Thanks to all my Facebook and LinkedIn friends: Skol. I toast you, with ginger ale. You’ve made it a pretty good year. Next year, the book.

PHOTO is by a family member, a few years ago.
Well, since I’ve been tagged so often now, I might as well come out and confess: This is what I look like. This is the picture they used in The Holy Wow Poets’ Anthology 2013.

Today is Mine: All Mine

Today is mine

Today is Mine!

H. W. Bryce

Today is mine!
I will do with it as I shall,
Be alone, or spend it with a pal,
Seize the day – carpe diem…
Okay, I might go fishing.
Today is mine, all mine,
Today I am the king!
Endless treasures for me to mine:
I can sing myself deaf,
Or buy an emerald ring…
I can visit at her graveside,
Or donate a pint of blood
This day will be anything but a dud.
Anybody tries to spoil it should guard their butt…
But today is mine.
It’s an open invitation
And I accept, I RSVP.
Mine is the day, I’m busy as a bee –
The day is fine , perhaps I’ll plant a tree.

Oh, I think I’ve earned it,
I’ve waited long enough,
Time to turn that leaf
And start a brand new life.

Wide open arms I greet the world,
Nothing’s gonna stop my whirl,
I’m dancing through the day
Feelin’ happy in every way.
Today I’m worry free
And I can see a future built for me.
Yeah! Today is mine. All mine.
No looking back, no regrets,
I’m not taking any bets,
I’m in control, I’m dancing free,
Today is mine – all about me.

And the I in me will share with you
Every bit of joy, and I think you’re due
For a day for you – but not today,
For today is mine – but you can share
’Cause today I love you all.
Today is mine, nothing can compare.
